The volumetric and wild grass painted with oil pastels and charcoal is contrasted with the flat, domesticated and artificial grass underneath the pictures.
This work stems from a reflection upon the common view of cut grass — the lawn — as a representation of wealth, taste and beauty, and its complete opposite — wild, untamed and overgrown grass — as a nefarious, undesirable and even dirty thing.
These disparate states and relative values are complemented by the two pictures’ scenes — an overgrown bush in the middle of the street in a rundown city, and the greenery from the abandoned ruins of a house — showing us nature invading even after disaster has struck.
